During this winter holiday, I have read a book called <The Sprit Of Chinese People>, written by Ku Hongmen. From my point of view, on the one hand, this is a great work which particularly talked about Chinese culture; on the other hand, some viewpoints in this book are really not appropriate nowadays. I will talk about this book from both angles.
First of all, we have to know this book’s main thought. The writer thinks that Confucianism shaped the spirit of the Chinese, the confucians use the moral code of conduct, namely birthright's sense of honor ,put the Chinese in small to family, big to the state of a set of organisms, so as to effectively improve the quality of the Chinese people, and, more importantly, to maintain the unity and stability in China for thousands of years. That is to say, Chinese society didn’t need religion or large amount of policemen or governor, because morality plays such an important role in Chinese people’s spiritual world. Which I thinki is still important for modern Chinese people, is the power of morality. As Mr.Ku said, love is the core of traditional Chinese morality, and the sense of honor pushes people to be better. I agree with this point of view, for with love, people can be kind to others; with the desire of honor, people can consciously obey the society rules. In this way, ancient Chinese society kept peace at most times in the past thousands of years.
What is more, Mr.Ku also talked about Chinese language. As far as I am concerned, ancient Chinese language is really elegant, and it is still attractive nowadays. The writer said that this elegant language can make people to be civilized. I partly agree with him, for this kind of language is really beautiful, so it can work as paints or music works—that is really a kind of art. Art can delight people, but also can lead people go to improve themselves. So I hope every modern man, not only modern Chinese man, can appreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese, for it is so elegant and so charming.
However, some viewpoints in this book are ill-timed, which are totally unacceptable in modern days. For example, his perspective about women. He thought that women should not appear on public occasions, and wives should always be loyal to their husbands. Also, he has underestimated the importance of math and other science. From today’s angle, these viewpoints are so old and so annoying. Anyway, he was born in old era and growed up in feudal family, so it is not strange that he has these thoughts. But for we people in modern era, I do not think we can agree with him.
Actually, every coin has two sides. Although some viewpoints in this book is ill-timed, it is still book worth reading. In this book, we can see the origin of Chinese culture, we can see how moral force improved the society, and, of course, see the sprit of Chinese people.
