The Spirit of the Chinese People
姓名:吴悠 班级:1809103
The author of this book is Ku Hweng-Ming , who is also the author of The Story of a Chinese Oxford Movement .As a great translator and scholar of Chinese culture , Ku Hweng-Ming made efforts to spread Chinese culture by publishing his masterpiece and he managed to provide a better understanding of Chinese culture for readers ,especially readers from different countries and different cultural backgrounds .
In the preface of this book ,the author informs us readers of the object of this book ,which is an attempt to interpret the spirit and show the value of the Chinese civilization . In his opinions ,the type of human beings ,which a civilization produces ,shows the essence ,the personality ,and the soul of that civilization .He summarizes the Chinese character and the Chinese civilization as depth ,broadness ,simplicity and delicacy .And I consider this as an admirable summary .
In the chapter where the author introduces the Religion of good citizenship ,he points out the fundamental unsoundness of the civilization of Europe today ,which lies in its wrong conception that human nature is evil .However ,the first principle of the Religion of good citizenship is to believe that the Nature of Man is good .Hence , the real Chinaman with his Religion of good citizenship doesn't need any other religion ,while the people of Europe have depended upon Religion and Law to maintain civil order .In terms of this theory ,I think that the Europeans will be surprised at Chinese culture and become more respectful of it.
I can't agree more with the author when it comes to his explanation of the Chinese spirit .According to his portrait of the real Chinaman as a person with the head of a grown-up man and the heart of a child ,he explains the Chinese spirit as a spirit of perpetual youth ,the spirit of national immortality .Hopefully ,each of us Chinese could live a life of emotion or human affection and be as gentle as the real Chinaman .
It is relatively difficult for me to understand the relation of husband and wife that the author talks about .From my perspective ,he seems to idealize that relation and the married life in order to speak highly of the selflessness of Chinese women .But generally speaking ,the author has a fairly deep understanding of Chinese family because he concludes that the source of real inspiration of Confucianism in China is the “Love of father and mother”——Filial Piety .He also stresses that the importance of Filial Piety is laid not upon what duties people perform towards their parents ,but upon how people perform those duties .I must admit that this is definitely a wonderful lesson that I have learned from this book.
As an important part of Chinese culture ,Chinese language is absolutely worth exploring and studying .In this book the author compares different versions of translation to show the charm of Chinese language. And I love his description that the words and style are plain and simple ,yet the language is deep in thought and feeling .
In conclusion ,this book shows and advocates various aspects of Chinese civilization ,which can give inspirations to readers around the world . From the bottom of my heart ,I really admire the author for his wide knowledge of Chinese civilization and the detailed explanation in this book .
