中国人的精神决赛作品(E13 180101504 吴新元)

The spirit of a Chinese person is very deep as is considered widely. So, it will be quite a bit difficult for most of the foreigners to understand the complex inwardness of it. Luckily, we still have someone who can make a simple talk on our spirit, which is really good from the view of a modern person. As a pure Chinese, Thomson use his clever brain fully and wrote such a brave book.

First of all, this book was not written to have fun, but to give praise to the spirit of Chinese people and argue that we Chinese is the best species on earth, at the same time. As can be learnt from our History textbook, China was going through a very hard time during the first part of the 20th century, so it will be very difficult to have a Chinese man to build up his confidence of his own country. Then, the writer: Thomson, who was a famous professor in Pekin University, just hold his opinion and wrote this book in which the spirit of Chinese people was just great and unbeatable. In fact, this book just embarrasses the foolish foreigners from another point, which is really wise of him.

In the very beginning of the book, it starts with the introduction of the essential differences between Chinese men and foreigners. As a result, we have to believe in his theory. The text itself seems to have some kind of magic, which can get the readers to have a tendency to think: yes, that’s reasonable; sure, keep telling. You will probably be confused to find that you cannot even find a reasonable word to argue against it (of course from the views of people in that time). I used to think that the spirit of Chinese people is fairly complex and maybe cannot be clarified clearly, but the book just makes me reconsider the problem and pay more attention to the art of words.

The most interesting part of the book comes when it begins to introduce the origin of the spirit of Chinese people. It first comes with the separation of man and woman. He introduced the inner differences of Chinese man and woman, which is the reason why our spirit has variability within its stability. Of course, it includes a lot of traditional Chinese classics and stories, which to some extent shows how the writer is well equipped with full knowledge. In a chapter, he even took Chinese poet for example. He chose some famous ones and translate them in two completely different way. At last it turns out that Chinese will contain much more meaning at the same time compared with English or other language.

However, there are still certain sides in this book that I cannot agree with, from the point of view of a modern student. For instance, gender discrimination still exists in the book and it appears sometimes, making me feel not good. Moreover, feudalism thoughts also seem obvious within the text, which should be abandoned today. Also, there are some outdate expressions in this book, which can be easily found.

‘Leave all that you have and follow me; follow me to the mountains, to the hermit' s cell in the mountains, there to live a true lifea life of the heart, a life of immortality.’ That is what the book was truly written for.

In conclusion, this is a great book, not only in the area history but in the area of literature as well. Anyway, that is pretty cool to read such an old book with a special spirit.
