Symbolism- The Old Man and The Sea

21英语8 刘诗雅

The sea in Western literature has a rich and colourful connotation, either as an innocent and lovely maiden or as a fierce and sinister demon. In The Old Man and the Sea, the sea is portrayed as female. The sea is always serene and slowly flowing as the old man fishes; even as the sharks take the old man's fish, the sea remains so calm.

It is always quiet, confident and equal, gazing at the 'tough' old man, Santiago. The sea is portrayed as a woman, gentle on the outside, but infinitely powerful, with unheard-of marlin and vicious, ravenous sharks, so unfathomable is she.

This is the sea in the true sense of the word, and it shows that the 'real' one is the one who is soft on the outside but strong on the inside, the one who is soft on the outside and humble on the inside but has extraordinary perseverance and fighting spirit.
