I have no opinion on extramarital affairs, nor do I feel that they are immoral mistakes, so I do not judge Hester, the priest, or the doctor. What bothered me about the book was that the doctor had been trying so hard to dig into other people's innermost secrets, thinking he was smart enough to read people's minds, and feeling genuinely angry and offended.
