  This woman gave me the impression of being very rigid and cold. In the childhood of Jane Eyre, she did not speak a single line to Jane herself, nor did she have any single interaction with Jane Eyre. It was as if eliza's cousin, in the first period of her life, had been but an old dusty boot in a corner, a dispensable and useless object.

  The housemaid addressed her as Miss Reed, but Miss Georgiana to Eliza's own sister. The honorific name distanced Eliza from Jane, and further from the reader.

  Eliza was not like the wicked sisters of the two heroines in Cinderella, who were stupid but somehow human. But not Eliza, the most emotionless character I have ever seen in literature.
