  I think it makes sense. Just like Gatsby in the book, he was born in a humble family. Although he later became a multimillionaire, he still couldn't wipe away his inferiority feeling when facing the feelings. But this sentence is not completely correct. Nick in the book never avoids his family background and tries to keep his original intention to earn money in the materialistic world.
