Love with ignorance
Rosemary Fell was born into privilege. She has wealth,well-connected friends, and a handsome fiance,Philip Alsop.Finallly she has everything she wants. It is then,in a moment of beneficence, that Rosemary invites Eleanor Smith,a penniless young woman she sees under a streetlamp in the rain, into her home for a cup of tea. While there,Rosemary sees Eleanor exchange an unmistakable look with Philip, and she sends Eleanor on her way.But she cannot undo this chance encounter, and it leads to a tempestuous and all-consuming love triangle--until the tides of war throw all their lives off balance.Inspired by a classic Katherine Mansfield short story,A Cup of Tea engages with its vivid-and often amusing-cast of characters, wonderful period detail, brilliant evocation of the uncertain days of World War I,and delightfully spare and picturesque sense of story.
The novel is not long but worth reading.
The writer is good at indicating the characters' moral actions by describing their conversations and movements. She also well used the descriptions of wheather and surroundings to imply how will the story develop. Her words have brought rosemary to life. The turning point at the end of the story is brief, reasonable and also unexpected.it is reasonable because there has been enough indication about what kind of woman rosemary is and why on earth rosemary wants to take smith home. But it still shocked readers that how fast and radically rosemary changes and how dependent she is on her husband and how fragile women's relationships are(it lasts shorter than a cup of tea). After reading the book,it comes to me sadly that even today this kind of thing may happen in our daily life.Several decades earlier, women are belongings to men and most of them didn't have their self-awareness.So it is no wonder that they can dump their friendships to defend their marriage. But nowadays, though women has recived educaation, but they can't get rid of the domination of men mentally, some women still regard their marriage as the only worthy thing in life. The situation of women can only be changed by the change of themselves.
As a female ,I feel really uncomfortable about the depiction of such living status of some women. What they care is only the emotional relation with their lovers/husbands or the meaningless satisfactory from dressing or shopping. It's a sad fact that they don't have something fully under their control , like whether Rosemary can buy that exquisite little box is not depend on her. In order to have a sense of control, she brought a poor girl home . However, her husband just made a little trick to let her send the girl away. In a word, Rosemary's husband took full control of her, and she was even unaware of it.
Everyone hopes to live a wealthy life. But what is more important is to live happily. Even you have millions of dollars, you may be not happy. Everyone should be respected. If you really want to help someone in need from the deep of your heart, then you must be a happy man.
