Book Review of  Alice

陶芷琪

These days, I have read a book named Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which was written by Lewis Carroll who was a mathematician rather than a author. These stories in the famous book is from what Lewis Carroll told to friend’s daughter, Alice who is considered as the the prototype of the protagonist in the book. The Alice’s adventures in wonderland is third-person narration and what is most out of imagination is that a mathematician that must be logical can write a story seeming chaotic.

The book is divided into twelve chapters, and each chapter is not only a little story but also a part of the whole adventure. The book tells readers a story : Alice fell asleep when her older sister read a book with her on the bank and then Alice had a colorful dream. In the dream, Alice chased for The White Rabbit taking a watch in its waistcoat-pocket and followed it to pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge and got another magical world different from our world. In the word, Little Alice could change her size by drinking the bottle or eating a cake to get into a lovely garden through a little door, even once she fell into a pool filled with her own tears.Afterwards, Alice met with many interesting people and animals, like The Caterpillar that seems haughty but teaches Alice how to change size freely, The Duchess whose favorite word is “moral”, The Cheshire Cat that always grins and helps Alice a lot, The Queen of Heart who gets angry easily and always threatens others to take their heads off and soon on. Finally, Alice was waken up by her sister gently and retold her wonderful dream to her sister, In the end , Alice’s sister half believed herself in the wonderland and experienced as Alice did.

After Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland,Lewis Carroll wrote another fairy tale,Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, which includes elements of chess and many themes about minor, like symmetry and time reversal. Two books are similar and just have few difference in plots. I would like to talk about the similarity. Two stories have the same protagonist,Alice, and they are full of logic and philosophy and show the author’s wonderful imagination.  Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There laid the state for Lewis Carroll in British literature.

After reading this book, I felt that I entered a new world, in which there are duchesses and cats and every role has their own thoughts. In fact, I have watched the movie of the same name. But the movie is about the story happening 13 years later after Alice finished her first adventure in the wonderland. So,the movie did not make me uninterested in the original. On the contrary, the experience of twenty-year-old Alice made me curious about the adventure when she was just seven years old. Fortunately, this book, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, tells me what Little Alice experienced and who she met with.

Therefore, I can firmly say that I like the fairy tale very much. There are some reasons why I appreciate it and this book has important impact around the world. In the first place, Alice asked herself “Who am I”and “What should I do” on and on during the adventure. In the wonderland, every one seems crazy expect Alice, so Little Alice can only rely on herself to clarify a series of strange incidents. From the process, Alice knew herself more and grew up into a brave “Big” girl.Alice’s experience reminds readers of our own experience of growing up and tempts a childlike innocence. Secondly, Alice has a pure heart and always hopes to be strong even though sometimes she can not help crying. This is a part of the book:

`You ought to be ashamed of yourself,' said Alice, `a great girl like you,' (she might well say this), `to go on crying in this way! Stop this moment, I tell you!' But she went on all the same, shedding gallons of tears, until there was a large pool all round her, about four inches deep and reaching half down the hall.

From what Alice said to herself, I find that the girl is so cute that I remember my childhood.Alice has many features of children.Children are beloved,it is same with Alice.

I appreciate this book and also want more people to read it. I write this book review of Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland to share the attractions of the story.By reading the book ,we can regain the imagination which we lost when we grow up and feel relaxed recalling childhood.Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland is a famous work for not only children but also adults.
