The Adventure of the Sussex Va
The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire attracts me at once not only for the reason that its title includes the word “vampire”, but also it is one of the series of The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. In fact, I am actually a crazy fan of vampire TV series as well as Sherlock produced by BBC. However, to my surprise, this book is a case that exactly have nothing to do with vampire.
The story tells us that one day Sherlock Holmes and Watson received a letter to ask for help by Robert Ferguson. He recounted that he encountered a miserable tragedy that his attractive wife unexpectedly turned out to be a vampire and she was witnessed sucking blood from the neck of her own baby. After that, he recalled the ridiculous facts that her wife also abused his another son Jacky. However, only after a few hours’ investigation did Sherlock come up with the conclusion that the man’s elder son attacked his brother with a poisonous weapon and what the woman did was to save her baby.
Actually, every characters of the story leave deep impressions on me, but I am not going to focus on Sherlock Holmes, the main character, instead I am going to analyze the other two characters which impressed me most——the mother and the elder son Jacky.
First of all, let’s talk about the “vampire” mother. It is the young woman that loves her children so much. She saved her baby even though she was mistaken for a vampire by her loving husband and she wasn’t never allowed to approach her baby. She scolded Jacky because he hurt the baby due to his distort jealousy while her husband thought it was mainly because she didn’t like him. Although she was wronged by her dear husband, she didn’t tell him the truth for the reason that she didn’t want to hurt him, but in my opinion, although it would upset him, only telling him the truth can solve the problem and avoid the same situation happening again. However, being wronged didn’t make her sad. What really hurt her is her husband didn’t trust her. To sum up, she is not only a loving mother but also a virtuous wife.
Now it’s time to talk about Jacky. Jacky became disabled after an accident and he didn’t like his healthy little brother. He was afraid that his brother would attract more attention and rob all of the love of his unique father from him. Therefore he attacked his innocent brother with a poisonous weapon without thinking. Unexpectedly, his step mother became the scape goat, a vampire who couldn’t control her lust for blood so that biting the neck of her own child. Maybe he would think that it’s a chance to get back his father’s love. However, as the saying goes, the truth will out. Sherlock Holmes easily find out the truth which astonished his father. Apparently, it is envy that contribute to this terrible consequence. In the reality, everyone may taste jealousy, but why we have such an emotion? Simply because we tend to compare ourselves with others unconsciously. What I want to say is every coin has its two sides, the same as everyone has his own strengths and weakness. We are supposed to not only focus on our merits but also spare no effort to make up for our shortcomings.
To sum up, apart from some professional detective skills, we can also learn something useful in our daily life through the vivid and proper characterization.
From my perspective, due to the well-rounded portrayal of characters, I have to say that the Adventure of the Sussex Vampire is definitely a perfect recommendation for people of any age if he wants to read something meaningful and interesting to spend his leisure time. What’s more, I also strongly recommend the adventure of the Sherlock Holmes, in which you can feel that brainy is the new sexy and start a secret adventure with Sherlock Holmes.
