Book Review

After reading The Great Gatsby, I was filled with mixed emotions. The novel is more than a failed romance; it is a sad ballad of shattered dreams amid America's prosperous era. Born into poverty, Gatsby built up his fortune from scratch, only to win back his youthful lover Daisy. He treats others sincerely and always keeps his pure original aspiration. This perseverance and kindness are what make him truly remarkable. However, the extravagant upper class is full of coldness and selfishness. Daisy was weak and worldly. She chose to walk away in times of trouble, leaving Gatsby to bear all the misfortunes alone. All his beautiful hopes finally turned into nothingness. The flickering green light on the opposite shore was both the hope Gatsby pursued all his life and an unreachable illusion. This ending deeply moved me: obsession with the past and reliance on others will always end in vain. We should face reality, let go of unrealistic fantasies, stay true to ourselves, and steadily build our own lives.
