The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a classic novel that reveals the emptiness behind wealth, vanity and the so-called American Dream. After finishing the book, I was deeply touched by Gatsby’s tragic life and the cruel reality of society. Gatsby was born poor, but he holds a sincere and persistent dream throughout his life. His love for Daisy becomes the whole motivation of his struggle. In order to win back Daisy, he changes his identity, gains great wealth, and builds a luxurious life. He throws endless grand parties, hoping that one day Daisy will walk through the door and return to him. To the outside world, Gatsby is a successful, glamorous and mysterious millionaire. However, behind all the glory, he is just a lonely man clinging to an old dream. What moves me most is Gatsby’s sincerity and persistence. In a cold and materialistic upper-class society, most people only care about money, status and pleasure. They are selfish, indifferent and irresponsible. Unlike them, Gatsby keeps his pure heart. He believes in love, holds onto hope, and dares to devote everything to his dream. His persistence makes him “great”, even though his dream is unrealistic. Unfortunately, his beautiful dream finally collapses completely. Daisy is not the perfect goddess in his memory. She is weak, selfish and cowardly. She enjoys Gatsby’s love and wealth but abandons him when disaster happens. Gatsby takes the blame for her and loses his life, yet almost no one comes to his funeral. All the former prosperity turns into nothingness overnight. The sharp contrast between his glorious past and desolate ending is extremely heartbreaking. From this story, I realize that wealth cannot buy true love and happiness. The glamorous life of the upper class is only a superficial illusion. Many people chase fame and fortune blindly, but finally lose themselves in vanity. Gatsby’s tragedy tells us that dreams without reality are fragile. At the same time, his perseverance and enthusiasm also teach me a lesson: the most precious thing in life is not material success, but a sincere heart and the courage to keep pursuing dreams.
