book review
I have recently finished reading Key Concepts in Chinese Thought and Culture 1. This book is a wonderful achievement of the national project for spreading Chinese ideological culture. It mainly explains basic cultural concepts from before the Wei and Jin Dynasties, such as "benevolence", "virtue", "Huaxia", "yin and yang", "Dao" and "feudalism".
Before reading this book, I only knew the modern meanings of these common terms. I never realized that their definitions have changed so much over history, carrying rich ancient wisdom and philosophical ideas. The book connects Confucianism, Daoism, and even Western philosophy in a clear and easy-to-understand way, which makes these abstract concepts much easier to grasp.
For students like me who are learning both English and Chinese culture, this book is really helpful. It helps me understand the roots of traditional Chinese culture better, and also gives me clear, accurate expressions for these concepts in English. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Chinese thought.
