A Fight Against Fate
The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a concise yet striking classic of world literature. Centered on an ageing fisherman Santiago, the novel records his tough three-day battle with a giant marlin far out in the open sea.
For eighty-four days, Santiago returns home empty-handed and is mocked by local young fishermen. Undefeated by bad luck, he sails deep into the ocean alone and finally hooks a huge marlin. Days of exhausting struggle follow; though he catches the fish, countless sharks tear the marlin’s flesh away on his voyage back. In the end, only a bare fish skeleton is left when he lands ashore.
The story’s true charm lies in Santiago’s indomitable spirit. His famous line “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” perfectly shows the core theme. Though he fails to bring back valuable fish, Santiago wins spiritual victory against hardship and fate.
Hemingway’s plain, terse language makes the tough ocean struggle vivid and touching. This short book teaches readers that true success never equals material gains. Bravery and perseverance are the most precious treasure in life.
