A Book Review: The M

The Merchant of Venice is a famous play by William Shakespeare. It is
a story about money, love, justice, and revenge. Although it was written
hundreds of years ago, the ideas in this play still feel important
today. The story has two main parts. One follows Bassanio, a young man
who needs money to win the heart of a rich and smart woman named Portia.
He asks his best friend, Antonio, to help. Antonio is the merchant of
Venice. He agrees to borrow money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender.
The problem is that Shylock hates Antonio. Shylock makes a dangerous
deal. If Antonio cannot pay back the money in three months, Shylock can
cut off one pound of Antonio’s flesh. The second part takes place in
Belmont, where Portia lives. Three men try to marry her by choosing the
right box. Bassanio chooses correctly and wins Portia. But then he
learns that Antonio’s ships have been lost at sea. Antonio cannot pay
Shylock, and Shylock wants his pound of flesh. The most famous scene
is the trial. Shylock refuses to take money instead of flesh. He demands
justice. But Portia, dressed as a young judge, saves Antonio. She says
Shylock can take the flesh, but he cannot take any blood. If he makes
Antonio bleed, his own life will be taken away. Shylock loses
everything. I think this play is powerful but also sad. Shylock is the
bad guy, but he is not simple. He has reasons for his anger. The other
characters treat him badly because he is Jewish. In one famous speech,
Shylock says, “If you hurt us, do we not cry?” This makes us think: who
is really cruel here? The play is sometimes funny and sometimes very
serious. The language is beautiful, but the story is not always easy to
like. In the end, “justice” feels unfair for Shylock. That is why
audiences still argue about this play today. I recommend The Merchant
of Venice to readers who enjoy stories with difficult questions. It is
not a clear happy or sad story. It will stay in your mind for a long time.
