Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice vividly depicts 19th - century English
class divides. Darcy’s initial disdain for the Bennets’ “vulgarity” and
Elizabeth’s resentment at his snobbery stem from rigid class
hierarchies. Yet their story subverts this: Darcy defies his aunt’s
class prejudice to pursue Elizabeth, and she looks past his rank to his
true character. This reminds modern readers that class labels are
hollow—genuine connection transcends social barriers, a lesson still
vital in our status - obsessed world.
