One of the most remarkable stories in the collection is "The
Dead". This story serves as a fitting conclusion to the entire
collection, tying together many of the themes and ideas that have been
explored throughout. Set at a Christmas party, "The Dead"
explores themes of love, loss, and the passage of time. The final
passage, in which the protagonist Gabriel Conroy reflects on the snow
falling over Ireland, is a masterpiece of writing. The snow is a symbol
of both the universality of human experience and the finality of death:
"His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly
through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last
end, upon all the living and the dead." This passage leaves the
reader with a sense of both sadness and wonder, a feeling that life is
both precious and fleeting.
