Frankenstein is a groundbreaking science - fiction novel penned by Mary
Shelley in 1818. The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who
creates a creature from scavenged body parts. Horrified by its grotesque
appearance, Victor abandons it. Despite being initially kind - hearted,
the creature is shunned by society due to its looks. Starved of
companionship, it turns to hatred and revenge, killing Victor's loved
ones. Victor pursues the creature in a bid for revenge and eventually
dies in the Arctic. The creature, filled with remorse, then chooses to
end its own life. This book delves deep into the themes of science and
humanity. Victor creates life but shirks his responsibility,
highlighting humanity's blind enthusiasm for science and disregard for
ethics. The creature's transformation from good to evil reveals how
social prejudice can destroy an individual, blurring the line between
humans and monsters and making us reflect on what true
"humanity" and "monstrosity" are. Moreover, the
novel also offers food for thought on the conflict between nature and
human civilization, as well as the impact of loneliness on people.
