Charles Dickens, the most creative novelist in English literature,
created a series of characters that were lifelike, and was known for his
extraordinary ability to shape space and rich perceptual details. Great
Expectations, written in 1861, is one of the important works of Dickens
in his later years. In this period of his later years, his works really
moved towards perfection and maturity. From the ending of the novel, we
can see the change of his mood. The protagonist of the novel is called
Pip, born in the countryside, his parents died at an early age, and he
was raised by his sister and brother-in-law Joe. Sister married to the
poor blacksmith to Pip do beat and scold, so Pip since childhood lived a
poor life, but then he grew up to become a blacksmith like Joe is very
much looking forward to. An unexpected opportunity, Pip came to the
house of the lady Havisham and met the love of her life, Estella, she is
so beautiful and noble. From then on he was not satisfied with the life
of a blacksmith and longed to be a gentleman worthy of Estella.
Magwitch, the prisoner Pip rescued when he was a child, had a large
amount of money, and Magwitch gave the money to Pip through a lawyer and
let him enter the upper society to become a gentleman. But when Magwitch
is found and caught, Pip loses his money, his lavish habits leave him in
debt, and Estella marries someone else. Then Joe came to him and paid
off his debt with his life savings. Pip finally returns to his true
nature and realizes what he really needs to do. Estella is also reborn
from the suffering life, and Pip hand in hand in the dim moonlight. In
the novel, Dickens attaches great importance to the rendering of the
environment, in addition to the natural environment and social
environment. The social environment makes me realize that the impact of
the environment on people is huge. In just a short period of time, Pip
learned a series of rules of life in so-called high society. When Joe
comes to visit him and goes to a restaurant with him, Joe's behavior
makes Pip feel rude and humiliated, and the meal ends badly. Pip has no
idea that Joe is his best friend. Dickens said: " The worst thing
in the world is to despise your own home. "This reminds me of our
lives will also appear this kind of thing, because some small unique
will boast noble, wanton hurt for their loved ones, it is time to
abandon the temptation of" superior people, "return to the
real. In addition to the male and female protagonists, Miss Havisham
also runs through the novel. A woman who can never see the light of day,
who is joined and deceived by her husband and brother on her wedding
day, is undoubtedly poor, bitter, and full of resentment. Her resentment
pollutes her heart and makes her soul ugly. She was also cruel, and she
made both Estella and Pip innocent victims. Although finally Havisham's
conscience returns to its original truth, the wood has become a boat.
There will always be a lot of disappointments in life, but we should not
pass this disappointments on to others. "Great Expectations"
Although called great expectations, but there is no great expectations,
there are only the ups and downs of the protagonist's life and
constantly honed mood. They will eventually return to their true nature.
