My book review
There is a line in the Old Man and the sea that is perhaps more famous than the book:" A man can be destroyed, but not defeated." Actually, it vividly and clearly represented the pride and stubbornness of human beings who never give in to the force. It can be catogoried as human's self-esteem, the perpetual and sustainable spirit of the main character Sandiego in this book. Neither young or strong, nor has special powers, the man is merely an old fishserman. Despite his abundant experience he accumulated in the past years, with little strength and old age, he still confronted with some setbacks during working. Worse still, he had no superior weapons against the vicious purple fish, and he lost all of them in the end. However, such an old man can be called a "tough guy"in some aspects.
First, notwithstanding what he has suffered, he stayed calm in good times and bad time. Before the fight with the shark, the old man had not rested for a long time. Hence, the huge marlin was a gift to the old man after 84 days of no harvest at sea. Santiago was excited. "Every now and then he looked at the fish to make sure it was real," the novel says. But he did not forget to remind himself: "Try to keep a clear head." It soon proved that the old man was indeed a very experienced fisherman. Hemingway wrote in simple and powerful language, "After an hour, the first shark launched a dock strike." The fish must not be killed until the final victory is achieved, that is, the fish is brought home. Success goes to the head. In addition, we should be calm not only when we succeed, but also when we fail or when we are in danger. Therefore, as a tough man can not only rely on courage, should always keep sober and calm.
Additionally, he kept resourceful and actively responsed to the challenges around him.In the novel, the old man's harpoon and rope were taken away by the first box fish, but the fish would not stop attacking. So the old man had to find a way to get his weapon ready at once. He tied a knife to the handle of the boat and proceeded to stab three vicious Galano sharks with the weapon, but after that the weapon was gone again. For the rest of the day, the old man faced the harsh reality of more sharks and fewer weapons. Everything in the boat, the hook, the OARS, and the sticks, became the tools the old man used to fight the fish. Faced with desperating cases, not only the belief to live is cruical, but a wise mind is essential .
Last, the bravery towards death is worthy thinking for the following people. In the vastness of the sea, only a wandering boat to accompany. There was no one to talk to, only to face the lonely self alone. In the face of nature, not to be outdone human beings are small, but also lonely. In the fight with the big marlin, he had a vague feeling that the stars in the sky were distant friends. When he was extremely sleepy, he even began to talk to the seabird: "Bird, if you like, please come to my house!" . Such profound loneliness moves readers more than mere expression of his astonishing will. A brave man must have smelled death. All the way back, the old man faced the danger of death many times, but he showed extraordinary bravery.
In this book, the author aimed to enphasize how significant the experinces of human are."A man can be destroyed, but not defeated." This is actually a tragic statement, its tone is tragic. But also because of this, the tough guy spirit is more memorable. Before Hemingway wrote "The Old Man and the Sea," the tough guys he wrote about were just the hardness of their personalities. Their appeal to the reader was entirely due to the specificity of the tough guys. Their value was only due to the rarity of the tough guys. However, the lonely old fisherman Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea is more than just a tough guy. The spiritual value embodied in him is a modern echo of the ancient Greek tragic spirit. In The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway finally found the soul for his beloved tough guy, and this soul is the eternal value of human beans. Therefore, in The Old Man and the Sea, the tough character of Santiago has become the surface of the novel, and the real theme of the novel is to praise the eternal value of human beings through Santiago's tough character.
