What I Understood
In high school, I have read the Chinese version of the Old Man and the Sea. Now I have the opportunity to read the English version of the Old Man and the Sea. The original and translated versions are very different. Reading the original English book, I feel I can have more personal understanding. I used to read the translated version of Zhang Ailing. She said it was her favorite foreign book. I can understand now.
The Old Man and the Sea is a masterpiece of Ernest Hemingway, an American writer. The author is a journalist who has experienced many ups and downs, experienced many twists and turns, but is still full of enthusiasm. Hemingway was inspired by his painful life experience and worldwide disasters.
To understand writing through the author's writing background: in the age when the author lived, human beings fought against each other for benefits and resources and tore up the moral mask. This moral mask, like the 1500 pound marlin caught by the old fisherman in the sea, has become the expectation and burden of the old fisherman on his voyage home. And the old fisherman has been looking for his ideal country. Why do you say so? There was a dialogue in the novel: "I miss you, tell me what you caught?" The old fisherman woke up at home and asked Manolin, which just proved that the old fisherman still had a bright and warm ideal country in his heart, but he could not touch it. The excited expression and eager action of Manolin relieved the old fisherman, who clearly knew that Manolin could catch big fish. Read here, my heart is full of feelings. I think maybe Manolin's brilliant smile is the nearest utopia to the old man. Maybe the utopia does not exist, but if it were there, the utopia must be in everyone's strong willpower.
