Sister Carrie
中律零捌
It is, so to speak, the coming-of-age of Sister Carrie, of a woman. The
narrative structure of bildungsroman usually follows the following
pattern: innocence -- temptation -- wandering off -- test -- loss of
innocence -- Epiphany -- understanding of life and self. Sister Carrie
came out of Columbia City at the age of eighteen naive, full of
aspirations for the big city, and eager to put down roots in it. At last
it was the time of her sister and her husband that determined her to
follow her own desires, and she accepted Drouet's help, lured by the
lure of money and the splendour of the city. In a short time, however,
drouet's indifference to Carrie, and her gradual increase in her demands
on her companions, led her to discover that she did not like Drouet at
all, but felt a moral attachment to him. And then they were false Hess w
(not because I have been think Hess w love Carrie and choose to steal
the money, he just for himself away from his family, the family, he
can't stand Carrie is just an excuse for this desire for him, obviously
could see that he is behind the regret this choice) tricked out, go to
New York. Carrie, on the other hand, had at first enjoyed the easy life
hurstwood had brought to her. Carrie had hoped that Hawverson would
bring more wealth and a happier life, but reality hit her hard and
Hurstwood went bankrupt. Finally Carrie finally wake up to their own
struggle to live the life they want, they re-embarked on the acting
road. Carrie, financially independent, had a new appreciation for men.
Men are unreliable, and only by themselves can they survive in society.
They also have some autonomy in their relationships. In the end Carrie
had all the material things she wanted, but she forgot that money soon
showed its impotence when one's needs belonged to the emotional world.
After fame and fortune, Carrie finally felt the emptiness of spirit.
Sister Carrie is a successful woman, although this road also made some
wrong decisions, but she eventually gained growth, under the urging of
the society she is not that innocent girl, but she is still kind of sympathetic.
