Sister Carrie came out of Columbia City at the age of eighteen naive, full of aspirations for the big city, and eager to put down roots in it. At last it was the time of her sister and her husband that determined her to follow her own desires, and she accepted Drouet's help, lured by the lure of money and the splendour of the city. In a short time, however, drouet's indifference to Carrie, and her gradual increase in her demands on her companions, led her to discover that she did not like Drouet at all, but felt a moral attachment to him.
