My story with Alice

再晴

When I was a child, I watched the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as an animation. After that I couldn't wait to read the novel.I was extremely impressed by the little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing a blue dress. For the first time, I knew that rabbits could talk and get anxious about being late, that hedgehogs could become balls, and that paint could turn white roses into red ones. I did not know that far away, in Alice's side, so many wonderful things are happening in this world. In her world, the cat can laugh, the caterpillar is the most intelligent being, drinking a sip of water can have larger body, eating a snack can be smaller, all things are so odd, but so reasonable.

As a child, I was so convinced that Alice's Wonderland was real, I begged my elders to let me keep a white rabbit. Unfortunately, my rabbit didn't take me to Wonderland, it was stewed and eaten by my parents, which is another story.I cried a lot and refused to eat any bite of my rabbit.

Maybe, because I grew up, or because I lost my dream about Wonderland at the same time as I lost the rabbit that night, I seldom paid attention to Alice afterwards and gradually forgot the wonderful feeling it brought to me.It was not until later that I grew up to adult and had the opportunity to read the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in English again. From the perspective of an adult, I saw in it a side of it that I did not see as a child. For example, the Duchess and her children, as a child I only found these new and amusing, but when I grew up I could see that the Duchess took care of her children rudely. She had absolutely no softness or carefulness as a mother. For curiosity about this situation, I consulted the relevant information. It turned out that in the Victorian age, people did not treat their children as a whole being, and the Duchess was representing the high aristocratic class of the time, who never took care of their children themselves.

Once again, Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland gave me a shock. It can both give children a dream-like wonderland and bring reflection and wake-up call to adults, and as its name, what a wonderful book it is.
