Personal Experience
酸甜小李子
Hemingway was an American novelist. Born near Chicago to a
family of doctors, he grew up with a passion for sports, hunting and
fishing. In 1952, Hemingway published another masterpiece, The Old
Man and the Sea, which soon became popular all over the world and
Hemingway's reputation reached its zenith. In 1953, he won the
Pulitzer Prize, the highest prize in American literature, and the
following year, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. How is
Hemingway's personal experience embodied in the old man and the sea?
Although "The Old Man and the Sea" extol the abstract
man's brave, struggling spirit, but the reader can easily feel the
essential power of man and his own situation, so he can get great
spiritual excitement, which is also the charm of "The Old Man
and the Sea".
Santiago is a fisherman, has been out to sea every day for
84 days, but he has always returned empty-handed. His wife was dead,
and manolin, the little boy, was the only one who helped the old man
gather his lines, hooks, and harpoons when he came home, often
forcibly removed by his parents. The old man and the little boy
talked about nonexistent meals and his favorite baseball team,
repeating almost the same conversation day after day.
The rod moved and the old man felt a Marlin eating the
bait in deep water. He pulled at the line and knew the fish was big.
But the fish is very clever, it just pulled the boat out to the open
sea, instead of pulling. So the day went by, and the old man felt
very tired. If only the boy had stayed with him and given him some
help. For two days the old man continued to tug at the fish and his
hand was hurt. At last the fish died and the old man tied it to the
side of the boat and set sail. When the boat sailed back to the
port, the beautiful big fish only had a thick fish bone. The
struggle day and night exhausted the old man. Sadly and lonely, he
packed up the damaged fishing gear, stumbled back to his broken
house and fell asleep tired. "The Old Man and the Sea"
embodies the author's unique writing style in many aspects. It is
consistent with his early "tough guy novels" in theme and
ideology, and fully shows the wisdom, courage and indomitable
fighting spirit of human beings in the face of difficulties. At the
same time, the novel also shows the loneliness of man, man and
nature also have a side of communication, so that the work has more
profound, grand thoughts.
By describing the courage and perseverance in the struggle between the old man and the shark, it reflects the creed and tough man spirit that people are not born to be defeated. People can be destroyed, but can not be defeated. No matter what difficulties fate presents us, we can face them calmly and move forward bravely. Because you know, you can be destroyed, but you can never be defeated.
