"The Old Man and the Sea“has created a classic image of a hard man. An old fisherman named Santiago went out to sea alone to fish and caught an incredibly large marlin after 48 days without a hitch. This is a big fish that the old man has never seen that is two feet longer than the boat and drifted for two days and two nights. In the process, the old man went through a difficult test, and finally stabbed the big fish to death and tied them to the bow of the ship. However, at this time encountered the shark, the old man and the shark had a deadly struggle, the result of the big marlin was eaten up by the shark, only a skeleton.

Why didn't the author let the old man win the final victory? In the words of the old man in the novel,"A man is not born to be defeated." and "a man can be destroyed, but not defeated." This is the philosophy that the book want to reveal. There is no denying that as long as it isa person, there will be defects. When a person admits this flaw and tries to defeat him instead of giving in to him, it doesn't matter whether he or she fails or succeeds in the end, because the value of a person's life has been fully reflected. The old man is the victor who dares to challenge his own dafeats. From a secular point of view, the old man is not the ultimate winner. Although he began to beat the Marlins, in the end, the marlin was eaten by  sharks, and he only came back to shore with the skeleton of the marlin, meaning the sharks were the winner. But in the eyes of idealists, the old man is the winner. Because he never surrendered to the sea and the shark. As the music master Beethoven said, "I can be destroyed, but I can't be conquered."

I think the author ultimately did not let the old man win is to tell us: when a person because of something to work hard, whether or not success is no longer matter, because the value of a person's life has been fully reflected in the process.
