Poison

Mary Read

Although the novel Poison is short in length, it has strong symbolic significance. This is something that shows up in Mansfield's other works.

The novel's title, poison, is an image that runs through the whole text. In a rare attempt to depict the interaction between lovers from a male perspective, the psychological description of the article focuses on the male protagonist. From the hero's psychology and performance , we can easily find that the hero is very infatuated with the heroine. His love is strong, but the heart has been lonely and sad. His desolation comes from the unequal love between the two. Although the man show all his love to the beauty, the woman has reservations for him, and did not fully hand over her sincere heart. The pain and suffering among them is just like poison for the hero. At the same time, poison has a second symbolic meaning. From the words of heroine, we can understand that she has experienced two unfortunate marriages, so she is afraid of give all of herself to the man. Marriage is also like poison to her, she does not have the courage to touch.

As a feminist, Mansfield embodies these two different perspectives in her works, which is worth learning from. Nowadays, the topic of feminism is being discussed more and more in China, and it has even become a stigmatized label. Not only is the road to feminism long and difficult, but the discussants are  narrow minded. Mansfield's work is still worthy to read today. Mansfield understood, and we need to understand, that talking about relationships is not about gender opposition, but about understanding and solving problems.
