Book Report
I want to talk about The Garden Party written by Katherine Mansfield, which gives me the deepest impression among these stories. This passage shows us about the gap between the rich people’s and the poor people’s living conditions. The author uses the limited third perspective—innocent and lively Laura--to tell this story. Laura hadn’t formed a very strict class concept, still had deep sympathy for the miserable life of the bottom people, and even tried to comfort them through her own efforts. This can be seen when Laura went to talk to her sister and mother about canceling the party. Compared with Laura, her mother and sister had a clear class concept as they thought there was no need to look after the bottom people’s feelings so they refused Laura’s suggestions. Another detail I pay attention to is that: a splendid hat which her mother gave to Laura. The article mentions that when Laura went to deliver food to the poor family of the deceased, she was surrounded and watched by neighbors because of her gorgeous clothes, which was incompatible with the environment, especially the hat. As a result, she cried out, "Please forgive my hat”, but she still insisted on not taking it off. It also proves that although Laura had pity on these tragic people in her mind, she could not truly empathize with them, because she didn’t have hard life experiences and could not give up the comfort of her own home.
