Book Report of The pupils
八步颠
The pupils written by Henry James is the emotional story. It
describes a tragedy between a premature young boy called Morgan growing
up in a fake and dishonorable family and his penniless young tutor
called Pemberton, who is the only adult in his life that he can trust.
Morgan was a sensitive, precious and sickly boy in eleven years old. He
lived in a middle-class family without any love and affection. His
parents worshipped status, power and money and only regard Morgan as a
tool of comparison in the society. They threw their children to
Pemberton, who was a private teacher and didn't receive any money he
should have gotten from Morgan’s parents. As time went by,Morgan felt
warm from Pemberton, which made him carve for leaving home. However, they
failed due to the economic issues. Finally, the story ended with the
tragedy of Morgan becoming the victim of the irresponsible parents.
After reading this book,I think Henry James not only wanted to tell us
the boy’s tragic life, but also wanted to show us the dark society at
that time. Since America entered the industrial age,the trend of
worshipping money, power and status was filled with the society, which led
to plenty of children couldn't grow in a healthy environment with fully
concern and love. In my opinion,no parents can regard their kids as a
tool to make profits;no parents can duck out of their duty to their
children. This novel is like a warning, which remind people of giving
their kids the love they deserved and think about carefully how to
establish a good relationship with kids.
