Guanyun Peak in Liuyuan Garden, Suzhou Guanyun Peak, in Liuyuan Garden in Suzhou, is actually a formation of stones from Taihu Lake. It stands near a spring, its shadow reflecting clearly in the water. The rock formation is modeled after a peak in real life. Between the reality and the reflection, the garden presents a fascinating, picturesque composition. At the foot of the rock formation are delicate yellow, white or red flowers, and halfway up the peak a pavilion alights; upwards is the peak pointing at the sky. From the bottom of the water to the water surface, the foot of the rock formation, the halfway view, and the sky, all constitute a landscape of rich layers of different views, and this is the very essence of a southern garden: the detail making for a perfect garden. 去书内

This chapter delves into the core of Confucianism, focusing on the concepts of ren (benevolence) and li (ritual propriety). Confucius emphasized that benevolence is the foundation of human relationships, advocating treating others with kindness and respect. Ritual propriety, on the other hand, serves as the behavioral guideline that maintains social order and harmony. The text illustrates how these ideas have shaped Chinese society for millennia, influencing family values, education, and governance. What strikes me most is the emphasis on moral self-cultivation—Confucius believed that individuals should constantly reflect on their actions to achieve moral perfection. This chapter also compares Confucianism with other schools like Taoism, highlighting their complementary roles in shaping Chinese cultural identity.
